Personality:
Even though Lethe is incapable of vocalizing her thoughts and feelings, she makes it very clear how kind a woman she is. When in the company of those she cares about, or simply wandering about town, she often has a smile on her face in spite of all she's faced. Unexpectedly for someone who spends most of her time fighting monsters and the occasional bounty hunter, Lethe has a soft spot for children, and will gladly throw herself into harm's way if it means saving a young life. She even donates most of what little money she receives from slaying monsters to orphanages or needy children rather than use it to make her own life more comfortable. A cheap inn room and food is all she needs to get by.
As a former member of the Church of the Divine Flame, Lethe follows a path of righteousness, although she's nowhere near as zealous and vindictive as the rest of the church is. It's one of the reasons she left. Even the slightest hint that someone might have connections to a darker power and the church wanted to immolate someone. Lethe requires proof of one's guilt, not simply a hunch. However, when something truly evil stands in her way, she shows no hesitation in smiting it wherever it may stand. Even so, she understands that there's more to the world than good and evil. There's a line between them, and there are many things that exist on that line. A balance of sorts, and that's where she believes she is herself.
Adventuring and crusading against evil does not leave much time for enjoying oneself, or hobbies in general. However, Lethe has taken up astronomy; something she can enjoy on the go. No matter where she travels, the night sky will always exist unless she's underground. She uses the stars as her guide, her map to her next destination. One day, she plans to stop her endless journey and settle down, although she has no idea when that may be. She's never known what it would be like to live a normal life, and she envies those that do.
While she spends most of her time smiling, Lethe lives with a fair amount of inner turmoil. There's always the nagging thought, the idea that what she's doing may not be the right path, as well as guilt over what she did as a member of the church. There's also the fact she was forced to slay her own father, or so she believes at least. She's not sure she can ever atone for the sins she's committed, but she'll never cease trying. No matter how many curses, how many scars she accumulates.
History:
To begin, Lethe never knew her mother. Her father was a rather famous magus and adventurer, one who despite wanting to care for his daughter, had other duties that unfortunately required him more. Regretfully, she was left at an orphanage, at least until she was found by a member of the Church of the Divine Flame, the followers of the Sun God, Coronis. Being taken in by the church, she was raised to follow their beliefs, although she did find herself questioning some of the things she did. However, Lethe wanted to do good, and she'd do her best to protect the world she knew.
Lethe became a strong young woman, both in mind and body. At the age of fifteen, she'd been indicted into the 'Burning Inquisition', the sect of the church that dealt with destroying evil in all its forms. In addition to her already slightly abnormal strength, which she wasn't sure how it was possible, Lethe learned to use divine magic, ranging from healing spells to utilizing divine fire itself. Her combat skills were awe-inspiring, her earlier years focused on wielding a greatsword.
On one particular crusade, Lethe faced off against a necromancer that had wiped out an entire village and used its previous occupants as undead slaves. Despite even the children becoming undead horrors, Lethe couldn't help but feel a little guilty as she cut them down. When fighting the necromancer himself, she nearly lost her own life, and as a dying gift, she was inflicted with a number of curses, including one that destroyed her vocal cords beyond healing. While she eventually had them all removed by the church, she was seen as damaged.
It wasn't until she was sent to hunt a particularly powerful vampire that she truly began to question the motives of the church. As it turned out, said vampire was in actuality, her father. The father she never really knew. While he talked to her in the midst of combat, the young woman was conflicted. Faced with a foe she was incapable of defeating on her own, the church had actually implemented a 'failsafe' of sorts in the greatsword she'd been given. The weapon exploded in a brilliant fashion, bathing both Lethe and Vane in flame. She barely survived...her father? She assumed was dead.
After being retrieved and healed to the 'best' of the church's abilities, Lethe was left very badly scarred. She was still alive, but no longer the beautiful young woman she was before, at least in her opinion. Even those she'd been friendly with before seemed to sneer in disgust at her. Having had enough, Lethe decided to leave the church and the inquisition behind, venturing off in the middle of the night. Purchasing only a knapsack and a rugged, but sturdy-looking staff from a local village, she ventured off into the wilderness. Unfortunately, this was seen as a betrayal by the church...and she was declared a wanted woman. She was hunted by the inquisition itself. To Lethe, it was a battle for her freedom, her beliefs, and her life. As if guided by an unseen force, she dispatched all those who'd been sent to hunt her, a voice speaking into her mind after she'd faced her latest trial.
So she began her solo crusade against the true evils of the world, guided by the voice in her head...and well, whatever evil managed to be unfortunate enough to catch her attention. Along the way, she met a number of companions whom she treasured, whom she occasionally partnered up with to help those in need. Niki Cirice; the kindly mercenary. Remei; the sassy 'cleric'. Vin; the half-vampire assassin with the heart of a child. Xun; the sorceror who befriended spirits. All companions she gladly would have given her life for.
Unbeknownst to her, Lethe was indeed being guided by a greater, unseen force. The gods were watching her, and looking to fill a gap in the pantheon. Every trial she'd faced, every curse inflicted upon her...all to groom her into becoming something more.
She would become the Goddess of Silence.
